The Centre for Drama, Theatre and Performance Studies

The Centre for Drama, Theatre and Performance Studies at the University of Toronto is the merger of the former Graduate Centre for the Study of Drama and the University College Drama program on St. George Campus at the University of Toronto. It is also home of Canada’s largest and oldest graduate programs in these disciplines.

Located in the downtown core of Toronto, it is the perfect place to experience and to become involved in all kinds of performance, not just theatre but a wide range of music, dance, cinema, circus, comedy–and more.

As a a part of Canada’s largest university, and because of this the Centre can offer a place for some of the best scholars in the world, from the broadest possible range of disciplines, to meet students researching in theatre, drama and performance studies. As you’ll see from the faculty list, the Centre has participating scholars from Cinema, Classics, Comparative Literature, Curriculum Studies, English, French, German, Italian, Medieval Studies, Slavic Languages, Spanish & Portuguese—among others– as well as from the university’s three undergraduate drama, theatre and performance studies programs.

The Centre believes that research takes many forms. Some of those forms are best served in the archive, and we have one of the best research libraries in North America. But some research projects are also well served in the laboratory of performance. We have two performance venues, along with our technical and production staff, available for use by both students and faculty as an integrated part of their research projects.
